How to check a Colorado roofer

Colorado has no state roofing licence. What exists instead is a patchwork that changes by jurisdiction, and most homeowners find that out after they have already signed. This is the guide we would want a member of our own family to read before a hailstorm, not after.

Everything below reflects requirements as of July 2026. Jurisdictions change rules. Confirm with the issuing authority before you rely on it.

Why "licensed and insured" means almost nothing here

It is the standard line in roofing advertising, and in most of Colorado the first half of it is close to empty. There is no state roofing licence to hold. A contractor saying "licensed" may mean a Denver contractor licence, a Pikes Peak Regional Building Department licence, a general business registration in a town that requires one, or nothing in particular.

So the question is not "are you licensed". It is "what does my jurisdiction require, and can you show me that specific thing".

Which credential your roofer needs depends on where you live

Colorado has no state roofing licence. Three different rules apply across this corridor. Status as of July 2026.

Inside Denver

A Roof Covering and Waterproofing supervisor certificate is required before the contractor licence.

Earning it takes two years of documented field experience across a minimum of 24 projects in 24 different months, at least 75 percent of them different low-slope systems on commercial buildings, supported by notarized letters covering the last ten years. There is no test.

What to ask: Ask for the supervisor certificate holder’s name and the company licence number, then check them with Denver Community Planning and Development.

Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region

A passed ICC contractor exam is required, and licences from other jurisdictions are not accepted.

The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department accepts ICC National Standardized or ICC Colorado Standard exams passed on or after January 1, 2017. A contractor licensed in Denver is not thereby licensed here.

What to ask: Ask for the PPRBD licence number and verify it on the department’s licence status lookup.

Most of the rest of the corridor

No roofing-specific credential is required at all.

That is not a loophole and it does not mean a roofer working without one is doing anything wrong. It means the credential is not the thing that tells you whether they are any good, so you verify something else.

What to ask: Ask for current general liability and workers compensation certificates naming you, a written contract, and the manufacturer certification for the exact system going on your house.

The Denver case in detail

Denver has the most substantial requirement in the corridor. A company needs a contractor licence, and behind it a person must hold a Specialty Class D supervisor certificate in Roof Covering and Waterproofing. The certificate comes first.

There is no exam. Denver qualifies people on documented experience instead:

That is a real barrier, and it is worth knowing what it does and does not prove. It proves documented years in the trade. Because the documentation is weighted three to one toward commercial low-slope work, it does not by itself prove experience with residential standing seam. If that is your project, ask about it separately and ask for addresses.

The Pikes Peak case in detail

The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department covers Colorado Springs and surrounding jurisdictions and requires a passed ICC contractor exam, accepting ICC National Standardized or ICC Colorado Standard exams taken on or after January 1, 2017.

Two things about it are worth carrying into a conversation with a contractor:

Everywhere else: what to verify when there is nothing to look up

Most of this corridor has no roofing credential. A roofer working without one there is not doing anything wrong, so treat this as a change of instrument rather than a red flag. Four things carry real weight:

Storm chasers, and the honest version of that warning

Significant hail brings out-of-area crews into the corridor within days. The usual advice is "only hire local", which is too blunt: plenty of legitimate companies travel to storm work, and plenty of local outfits are mediocre. The useful filter is whether the things above survive contact.

A crew that cannot produce agent-issued insurance certificates, will not put a change-order process in writing, cannot name the exact system with manufacturer documentation, and has no local addresses to show is a bad bet whether they are from Aurora or Alabama. In Denver and the Pikes Peak region you have one more instrument, so use it.

A checklist you can take to a quote

Once you know what to ask, the Colorado Metal Roofing Guide covers the rest of the decision: what Class 4 is, what your carrier is and is not obliged to do, and what the roof costs.

Questions homeowners ask

Is there a Colorado state roofing licence?
No. There is no statewide roofing licence in Colorado. Requirements are set by individual jurisdictions, and they differ enough that a contractor properly credentialed in one place may hold nothing at all in another.
Is it illegal to hire a roofer without a licence?
Not where no licence is required, which is most of this corridor. That is the point of this guide: the credential is only meaningful in the jurisdictions that have one, so everywhere else you have to verify something that is meaningful.
What is the single most useful thing to ask for?
Current general liability and workers compensation certificates, sent to you directly by the insurance agent rather than forwarded by the contractor. A forwarded PDF proves a policy existed on the day it was issued. A certificate from the agent naming you proves it exists now.
How do I check a Denver roofer?
Ask for the company contractor licence number and the name of the person holding the Roof Covering and Waterproofing supervisor certificate behind it, then verify both with Denver Community Planning and Development.
How do I check a Colorado Springs roofer?
Ask for the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department licence number and check it on the department lookup. Note that passing an ICC exam is not itself a licence, so verify the licence rather than accepting an exam result.
