Metal roofing for foothills and wildland interface homes

West of the corridor the roof stops being only a hail question. Where housing meets forest and grassland, the same roof is being asked to handle wind-driven embers, heavier snow, and the hail that still arrives every summer.

Embers, and what a roof can honestly do about them

Most homes lost in an interface fire are not lost to a wall of flame arriving at the door. They are lost to embers carried ahead of the fire that find somewhere to land and smolder. A roof assembly carrying a Class A fire rating is the single largest surface you can address, and metal assemblies commonly reach it.

What a roof cannot do is close the other openings. Embers enter through vents, gaps at the eave, decks, and window openings. Treat the roof as the biggest item on a longer list, and ask your local building department and your insurer what else they want to see.

Snow, and why retention belongs in the quote

Metal sheds snow, which is usually the point and occasionally a hazard. A roof plane that dumps its load over an entry, walkway, driveway, gas meter or air conditioner needs snow retention designed into it, not added after someone gets hurt. Ask for it in the quote by name.

Ask before you specify

Which credential your roofer needs depends on where you live

Colorado has no state roofing licence. Three different rules apply across this corridor. Status as of July 2026.

Inside Denver

A Roof Covering and Waterproofing supervisor certificate is required before the contractor licence.

Earning it takes two years of documented field experience across a minimum of 24 projects in 24 different months, at least 75 percent of them different low-slope systems on commercial buildings, supported by notarized letters covering the last ten years. There is no test.

What to ask: Ask for the supervisor certificate holder’s name and the company licence number, then check them with Denver Community Planning and Development.

Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region

A passed ICC contractor exam is required, and licences from other jurisdictions are not accepted.

The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department accepts ICC National Standardized or ICC Colorado Standard exams passed on or after January 1, 2017. A contractor licensed in Denver is not thereby licensed here.

What to ask: Ask for the PPRBD licence number and verify it on the department’s licence status lookup.

Most of the rest of the corridor

No roofing-specific credential is required at all.

That is not a loophole and it does not mean a roofer working without one is doing anything wrong. It means the credential is not the thing that tells you whether they are any good, so you verify something else.

What to ask: Ask for current general liability and workers compensation certificates naming you, a written contract, and the manufacturer certification for the exact system going on your house.

Questions homeowners ask

Does a metal roof make my house fire safe?
No single component does. A roof assembly can carry a Class A fire rating, which is about how the assembly resists fire exposure in a test. Embers also enter through vents, gaps at the eave, decks and window openings. The roof is one part of a whole-house approach.
Does my county require anything specific?
Wildland interface requirements vary by jurisdiction along the corridor and some counties have adopted their own. Ask your local building department what applies at your address before you specify a system.
Does snow slide off metal?
Yes, and that is a design decision rather than a side effect. If the roof sheds over a walkway, driveway, entry or gas meter, snow retention should be in the quote.
