Class 4 impact-resistant roofing in Colorado

Class 4 is the rating that turns a roof into an insurance conversation. On the Front Range, where the same houses take hail again and again, it is usually the reason a homeowner starts looking at metal in the first place. Here is what the rating is, how you prove you have it, and what your carrier is and is not obliged to do about it.

The test itself

UL 2218 drops a two-inch steel ball from a set height onto the same spot on a roofing sample, twice. If the substrate does not crack, the sample passes. Class 4 is the highest of the four classes in the standard, and it is what carriers look for.

Most metal roofing systems earn Class 4, though it is a property of the specific product and assembly rather than of metal as a category. Class 4 asphalt shingles also exist and are a cheaper route to the same credit with a shorter service life.

What Colorado law actually requires, as of July 2026

A great deal of Colorado roofing content says state law requires your insurer to discount a Class 4 roof, citing C.R.S. 10-4-110.8. That statute covers homeowner's insurance prohibited and required practices: cancellation, claim information, extended replacement cost, policy readability, reconstruction cost disclosure, contents, wildfire loss, dog breeds. It contains no roofing provision.

What is true: the major carriers in Colorado offer impact-resistant credits as their own programs, priced in their own rate filings. And Senate Bill 26-155, effective 2026-08-12, requires insurers to grant resilient-roof discounts and, from no sooner than January 2027, to demonstrate in annual filings that those savings reach policyholders. The mandate is arriving. It is not already behind you. The Colorado Metal Roofing Guide covers this in full.

Documenting it so the credit actually lands

Ask for all three in the contract, and collect them at completion before final payment.

Work it out for your own house

The four numbers that decide whether metal pays

  1. 1. The install. Standing seam on a typical Front Range home runs roughly $18,000 to $36,000 depending on size, pitch, panel gauge and how much tear-off is involved. Stone-coated steel sits lower in that range. Get the number from a quote, not from a website.
  2. 2. What you would have spent anyway. If hail has already taken your roof, your claim covers a like-for-like replacement. Metal is an upgrade, so the real question is not the full ticket, it is the difference between the claim settlement and the metal quote.
  3. 3. The annual insurance credit. Ask your carrier, by name, what their impact-resistant or Class 4 credit is on your dwelling premium. Most Colorado carriers run one. The amount is theirs, not the state's, so it varies. Multiply it by the years you expect to own the house.
  4. 4. Replacement cycles avoided. This is the number Colorado homeowners underweight. On a hail-belt asphalt roof you may be doing this again in a decade. A metal roof is normally a once decision.

Numbers 1 and 3 come from your quote and your carrier. We will not put a percentage in your mouth, because the credit is set in each carrier's own rate filing and anyone quoting you a statewide figure is quoting marketing.

Which credential your roofer needs depends on where you live

Colorado has no state roofing licence. Three different rules apply across this corridor. Status as of July 2026.

Inside Denver

A Roof Covering and Waterproofing supervisor certificate is required before the contractor licence.

Earning it takes two years of documented field experience across a minimum of 24 projects in 24 different months, at least 75 percent of them different low-slope systems on commercial buildings, supported by notarized letters covering the last ten years. There is no test.

What to ask: Ask for the supervisor certificate holder’s name and the company licence number, then check them with Denver Community Planning and Development.

Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region

A passed ICC contractor exam is required, and licences from other jurisdictions are not accepted.

The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department accepts ICC National Standardized or ICC Colorado Standard exams passed on or after January 1, 2017. A contractor licensed in Denver is not thereby licensed here.

What to ask: Ask for the PPRBD licence number and verify it on the department’s licence status lookup.

Most of the rest of the corridor

No roofing-specific credential is required at all.

That is not a loophole and it does not mean a roofer working without one is doing anything wrong. It means the credential is not the thing that tells you whether they are any good, so you verify something else.

What to ask: Ask for current general liability and workers compensation certificates naming you, a written contract, and the manufacturer certification for the exact system going on your house.

Questions homeowners ask

Does Class 4 mean my roof cannot be damaged by hail?
No. Class 4 means a two-inch steel ball dropped twice on the same spot did not crack the substrate in a lab. Severe Colorado hail can still dent metal cosmetically. Ask how the manufacturer warranty treats cosmetic denting, in writing, before you sign.
Do all metal roofs qualify for Class 4?
Most systems do, but it is a property of the specific product and assembly, not of metal in general. Get the manufacturer documentation naming the exact system and its UL 2218 class.
Is the insurance credit required by law?
Not that we can verify today. Most Colorado carriers offer an impact-resistant credit voluntarily. Senate Bill 26-155 makes resilient-roof discounts an obligation with rate-filing proof from no sooner than January 2027. Be careful with sites citing C.R.S. 10-4-110.8 for this; that statute does not contain a roofing provision.
